W tym kontekście Tessalów można postrzegać nie jako plemię, które przybyło na Nizinę Tessalską z Tesprotii, ale jako wspólnotę, która uformowała się w Tessalii, co najwyżej odwołując się do mitu wspólnej wędrówki. Tego typu mity, wraz z mitami genealogicznymi, były obok przyjęcia wspólnej nazwy elementem tworzenia identyfikacji etnicznej. Proces powstawania ethnos nie był nieodwracalny, przeciwnie - niektóre identyfikacje mogły z czasem tracić na znaczeniu, niektóre nawet zaniknąć. Istniejący ethnos mógł rozpaść się na mniejsze lub stać się częścią większej grupy etnicznej, możliwe też było jednoczesne posiadanie więcej niż jednej identyfikacji etnicznej. [S.
